Official Rules

ELIGIBILITY: The Rocket21 “Journey to Mars Voice” Contest (“Contest”) begins 12:01:00 AM Eastern Time September 28th, 2015 and ends at 11:59:59 PM Hawaii-Aleutian Time February 29th, 2016 (“Contest Period”). There is no purchase necessary and no payment of any kind is required to enter or win the Contest. The Contest is open to legal residents of the United States, including the District of Columbia, who are Rocket21 Student Members at the time of entry. Consent by parent or legal guardian (“Parent”) is required for participants under the age of 13, prior to participation in the Contest. This consent is secured from parents and guardians during the enrollment and consent process for children under 13 in Rocket21 Student Membership. This Contest is void outside of the United States. This Contest is void in Puerto Rico and where prohibited or restricted by law. Employees of Rocket21, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), including members of their immediate families – i.e., spouse, mother, father, in-laws, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister, children and grandchildren – or same household - are not eligible to participate.

TO ENTER: Registered Student Members of (the “Website") who live in the United States or the District of Columbia (excluding Puerto Rico); who are OPTED IN to Rocket21 Contests based on their membership or consent settings as of the last date of the Contest period; and who have appropriate parental permissions if under 13; may enter the Contest by submitting a valid entry. Each valid entry is comprised of the following, which must be submitted to the Official Contest Page available to all Student Members at during the Contest period.

The following elements constitute a valid entry for scoring consideration in the National Finalists and Grand Prize competition.

  1. Valid Rocket21 Student Membership and Rocket21 Screen Name
  2. Completion of Milestone 1 (Research) required elements:
      • Submitting a selection of one topic from three choices provided
      • Entering comments in response to all Milestone 1 prompts
  3. Completion of Milestone 2 (Brainstorm) required elements:
      • Submitting an idea for a podcast or vodcast
  4. Completion of Milestone 3 (Design) required elements:
      • Write a draft script for a podcast or vodcast
      • Submit a draft script for a podcast or vodcast
  5. Completion of Milestone 4 (Build & Improve) required elements:
      • Submit comments to share the feedback received and share any plans you have to make further improvements before submitting a final podcast or vodcast.
  6. Completion of Milestone 5 (Launch) required elements:
      • Submit a final podcast or vodcast

MULTIPLE ENTRIES PER STUDENT MEMBER: Each entry may be submitted only once – however Student Members may submit up to THREE different final entries.

SCORING: The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges from Rocket21, Innovation Now, NIA and NASA. Scores will be calculated on a 15 point scale. Up to 5 points may be awarded based on Factual Accuracy, as evidenced by the student’s representation of the challenge he has chosen to address. Up to 5 points may be awarded on the basis of the Substance (originality, innovation, anticipated effectiveness, etc.) of the student’s proposed solution. Up to 5 points may be awarded to reward Presentation (writing, delivery, creativity, passion, style). Each judge may also, at his sole discretion, award up to 5 additional points on the basis of Judge’s Wild Card, providing each judge with the optional latitude to recognize other aspects of the student’s submission and the judge’s overall impression of the entry.

SELECTION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF NATIONAL FINALISTS: The top SIX highest scoring entries from each age group (Students Under 13 and Students 13-17) will constitute the group of national finalists. Rocket21 members who are age 18 or 19 at the time of scoring, but who joined Rocket21 prior to their 18th birthday, are eligible for selection as National Finalists in the Teen category.

National Finalists will be announced on Rocket21 on March 10th, 2016. The judges’ decisions are final and binding in all matters relating to this Contest.

SELECTION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF GRAND PRIZE WINNERS: Beginning Monday, March 14th, Rocket21 will present a voting page open to all members of Rocket21, and accessible for public voting. The voting page will present two categories for voting – National Finalists for the Students Under 13 group and National Finalists for Teens. Based on the votes collected through midnight anywhere in the U.S. on Sunday, March 20th, one grand prize winner will be selected from the Under 13 group and one grand prize winner will be selected from the Teen group. Rocket21 members who are age 18 or 19 at the time of scoring, but who joined Rocket21 prior to their 18th birthday, are also eligible for selection as Grand Prize winners in the Teen category.

Grand Prize Winners will be announced on Rocket21 on Monday, March 21st.

DESIGNATION OF ALTERNATES: If the first Grand Prize winner selected in either category is unable to attend the Grand Prize trip in April 2016, the Member submitting the next highest scoring entry in the same age group will be eligible to receive the entire Grand Prize Package. If necessary, this process will be repeated until each eligible winner is selected. All prizes will be awarded.


National Grand Prizes: Two National Grand Prize Winners will be selected. One National Grand Prize winner will be selected from eligible entries submitted by Rocket21 Members under age 13 at the time of submission; one National Grand Prize Winner will be selected from eligible entries submitted by Rocket21 Members ages 13-17 at the time of submission. Rocket21 members who are age 18 or 19 at the time of scoring, but who joined Rocket21 prior to their 18th birthday, are also eligible to win in the Teen category.

PRIZES: The following Grand Prize Package will be awarded to TWO (2) winners:

Two National Grand Prize Winners will EACH receive a Prize Package which includes:

      • Round-trip airfare for 2 persons (including the Contest winner and the winner’s parent or legal guardian) to Washington, D.C. Air travel will be arranged to and from an airport near the winner’s residential address. When multiple options are available, the choice of airport is at the sole discretion of Rocket21.
      • Up to 3 nights’ hotel accommodations for 2 people in Washington, D.C. on April 15th, 16th, and 17th. Dates subject to final event logistics and winner location.
      • $500 cash award for meals and incidentals for both travelers.
      • Admittance for two to USA Science & Engineering Festival
      • Onstage recognition at the USA Science & Engineering Festival Signed Certificate of DistinctionPersonalized tour of Smithsonian Air and Space Museum with Mars subject matter expert
      • Round-trip ground transportation between Washington, D.C. area airport and hotel

GRAND PRIZE VALUE: The Approximate Retail Value of each National Grand Prize Package is $3000.00.

NATIONAL FINALIST PRIZES: The following National Finalists Prize Package will be awarded to TWELVE (12) winners:

Twelve National Finalists will each receive a Prize Package which includes:

      • The opportunity to collaborate with producers of Innovation Now, to refine, produce and distribute the student’s podcast on the Innovation Now program, heard by more than 10 million listeners and subscribers each day
      • Presentation of the student’s podcast on the Rocket21 public voting page

The Ten National Finalists who are not selected as Grand Prize Winners will also receive:

      • One pair of Beats Solo2 headphones
      • $100 cash
      • A signed Certificate of Distinction

NATIONAL FINALIST PRIZE VALUE: The Approximate Retail Value of each National Finalist Prize Package is $400.

MARS MONDAY DRAWINGS: Beginning on Monday, November 30th, 2015, and continuing each Monday for TEN consecutive weeks (Monday November 30th; Monday December 7th; Monday December 14th; Monday December 21st; Monday December 28th; Monday January 4th; Monday January 11th; Monday January 18th; Monday January 25th; Monday February 1st) Rocket21 will present a “Mars Monday Drawing.” In each of the Monday drawings, TEN winners will be selected to win one prize from the Rocket21 Prize Vault, including Beats headphones, NASA Merchandise and gift certificates from online retailers.

Each time a Rocket21 member completes and submits a Journey to Mars Voices Challenge milestone, the student will receive the equivalent of ONE entry into all remaining Mars Monday Drawings. For each completed and submitted milestone, the student will receive ONE additional entry into the remaining Mars Monday Drawings. All participating students have the opportunity to receive up to FIVE entries into all Mars Monday Drawings that have not yet occurred at the time of the student’s latest submission. In addition, as outlined in the Notice to Overachievers on the Milestone pages, students have opportunities to receive additional Mars Monday Drawing entries, based on additional submissions consistent with the guidelines presented.

Mars Monday Drawing winners will be announced on Rocket21 no later than 8pm Eastern Time on the date of each drawing, as noted above.

MARS MONDAY DRAWINGS PRIZE VALUE: The specific prizes are subject to change from week to week. Each week, a minimum of TEN winners will receive prizes ranging in value from $25 to $200 each. The minimum retail value for each weekly prize package will be $800, including 4 prizes valued at $25 each, 2 prizes valued at $50 each, 2 prizes valued at $100 each, and 2 prizes valued at $200 each. The total minimum retail value for all 100 Mars Monday Prizes will be $8000.

WARRANTY: Rocket21 does not offer any warranty or guarantee, either expressed or implied in connection with this Contest or any prize. Any federal, state, or local taxes on prizes, and any other costs, fees or expenses not listed above are the sole responsibility of each winner.

NOTIFICATION: The Winners will be notified by available phone number or email address, based on information made available to Rocket21 by the winner’s parent (if the winner is under 13), or by the winner (if the winner is 13-18). To claim the prize, Rocket21 will require the winner or the Parent of any winner under 13 to sign the delivery notification from the package delivery service selected by Rocket21, confirming receipt of the prize. If a winner cannot be contacted, fails to timely claim the prize, is disqualified, fails to timely execute and return any required forms, or if the prize notification is returned as undeliverable, an alternate winner will be selected from other participants. Under no circumstances will more than the advertised number of prizes be awarded.

PUBLICITY & MARKETING: Acceptance of any prize awarded during the Contest constitutes permission to Rocket21 to use winner’s name, voice, statements, image and likeness for purposes of advertising and trade, in any medium, without further compensation or notice, unless prohibited by law.

NO LIABILITY & INDEMNIFICATION: Rocket21 assumes no responsibility and is not liable for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate entry information, or for any faulty, failed, garbled, or jumbled electronic data transmissions; (b) any unauthorized access to, or theft, destruction or alteration of entries at any point in the operation of this Contest; (c) any technical malfunction, failure, error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or communications line failure, regardless of cause, with regard to any equipment, systems, networks, lines, satellites, servers, computers, or providers utilized in any aspect of the operation of the Contest; (d) inaccessibility or unavailability of wireless networks or text messaging service or any combination thereof; or (e) any injury or damage to participant’s or to any other person’s wireless phone or computer which may be related to or resulting from any attempt to participate in the Contest. Participants agree to release, indemnify and hold harmless Rocket21 and its affiliated and related companies, successors and assigns, suppliers, distributors, advertising/promotion agencies, and prize suppliers, and their shareholders, officers, directors, employees, representatives and agents from and against any claims, demands, losses, promises, cause of action and liabilities, including, but not limited to, personal injury, death, or damage to or loss of property, arising out of the preparation for, or participation in, this Contest or receipt or use or misuse of the prize.

OTHER TERMS: Decisions of Rocket21 on all matters related to the Contest are final. Rocket21 reserves the right to cancel or modify the Contest for any reason, including but not limited to, if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the Contest, or if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper administration of the Contest as determined by Rocket21, in its sole discretion. Rocket21 reserves the right to disqualify or prohibit the participation of an individual if fraud or tampering is suspected, or if the individual fails to comply with any requirement of participation or with any provision in these Official Rules or the Contest Rules that apply to the winner’s Rocket21 Membership. CAUTION: Any attempt to deliberately damage or undermine the operation of this Contest is a violation of criminal & civil laws. Rocket21 reserves the right to disqualify and/or seek damages from any individual making any such attempts to the full extent permitted by law.
